Poor man kills own son due to poverty

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 30 - 2008

Reports say, the man became totally depressed because he can’t seem to get the money to feed his kid. The man works as a matador and earns roughly 3,000 per month. With the high prices of baby’s milk, the father became desperate and in his desperation, he chose to end the life of his kid.

Why are we poor?

Why are we poor?

A 29-year old man from Legazpi City Albay just stabbed his 4-month old baby to death. The man, whom I will not identify here, killed his son out of desperation.

This incident was reported by the local media in Albay last 28 July 2008. This is a reported case. How about those whom the media failed to report?
Gloria admitted during the SONA that there are as many as 15 million poor Filipinos now. She says more than 1 billion pesos have been released to at least ease their suffering. And more will be coming (about 8 billion). How soon will this help come? Will it really ease the burden of poor Filipinos?
A survey released today showed 75% of Filipinos feeling more depressed right now than a year ago. They say, their quality of life deteriorated. I can’t say more, because even I myself and my family are beginning to experience the vulgarities and cruelties of this life under Gloria.
What I fear the most is this month, August. With a very lean rice stock, will we survive a potential food crisis? Farmers are rather worried because the harvest is potentially getting leaner and leaner by the year. Farmer cooperatives say, government has not extended help through fertilizer subsidies at this point.
Will our people be able to cope with another round of food price increases? How about another 6 pesos hike in diesel prices? How about another increase in electricity and water rates?
These questions should have been answered by Gloria during her SONA. Yet, our lovely president preferred to give us 50 cents discount in text instead.

Cellphones kill babies; 10,000 already died due to radiation

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 30 - 2008

A recent study by a top-notch US-based scientist shows that babies could die from cellphone radiation if left exposed for a long time. The paper written by Sir William Stewart is causing tremendous reactions throughout the globe. Here’s what the news says:

Mobile phone firms cynically target children even though they may be most vulnerable to the effects of radiation, a leading scientist, Sir William Stewart, warned. Stewart chaired the world’s largest investigation into mobile phone safety. The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation.

US scientists tested mobile phone-style radiation on more than 10,000 chicken embryos. Pregnant women have been warned to be wary of using mobile phones after it was found radiation produced by the devices caused defects in the chicken embryos. The cell phone industry continues to down-play the risk and defer to more research.

Children using mobile phones absorb as much as double the amount of radiation through their heads as adults. Dr Om Ghandi, a leading scientist and professor of electrical engineering at the University of Utah found that young children under 10 years of age could absorb radiation across their entire brain. He found that more radiation is able to go past the ear and into the head since a child’s ear is thinner and the telephone is closer to the head. All it takes is two millimeters difference,” Dr Ghandi said.

Until proven otherwise and technology becomes safe, children including teens should not use mobile phones, at all, because they are more at risk from the radiation, and their cell growth and brain wave activity are not yet stable. There is conclusive evidence that the phones have biological effects on humans even where the radio frequency or microwave radiation is emitted at very low levels.

Mobile phones and the new wireless technology could cause a “whole generation” of today’s teenagers to go senile in the prime of their lives, research suggests. Professor Leif Salford, who headed the research at Sweden’s prestigious Lund University, says “the voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones” is “the largest human biological experiment ever”.

Professor Salford and his team have spent 15 years investigating microwave radiation. Their studies proved radiation could open the blood-brain barrier, allowing a protein called albumin to pass into the brain. Their latest work shows the process is linked to serious brain damage. Professor Salford said neurons that would normally not become “senile” until people reached their 60s may now do so when they were in their 30s. In addition, research indicates that exposure to cell phones’ radiation causes red blood cells to leak hemoglobin. Scientists exposed samples of blood to microwave radiation and found that even at lower levels than those emitted by cell phones, the blood cells leaked hemoglobin.

Marketing to Children
Cell phones, which are practically standard equipment for teenagers in today’s world, are finding their way into the even smaller hands of preteens. Cell phones designed for preteens have controls that allow parents to limit whom kids can talk to. Preteen cell phones are soon to be marketed nationwide with big expectations that preteen cell phone usage will become a national trend. Paul Saffo of the Institute for the Future in Menlo Park, California says, “It won’t be long before no self-respecting kindergartner is going to start school without a cell phone.”

The cell-phone industry has continually insisted there is no proven link between cell phones and health problems. But patents for protective devices to reduce the amount of radiation absorbed by the brain suggest that Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola believe otherwise. The big three have come up against multimillion-dollar legal actions by people claiming their health has been damaged.

The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation. The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association hired Dr. George Carlo to head up a $28 million research program into possible health effects from cellular phones. The research showed an increased rate of brain cancer deaths, development of tumors, and genetic damage among heavy cell phone users. Dr. Carlo has since broken with the cell phone industry to become a vocal critic, and coauthored a book called Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age

Radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation researcher at the University of Washington, in Seattle, Dr. Henry Lai, showed microwave radiation from mobiles caused genetic damage similar to that found in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s sufferers. To quote Dr. Lai, “It is difficult to deny that RFR at low intensity can affect the nervous system.”

Dr. Lai submitted his research to the Stewart committee showing that radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (RFR) can penetrate into organic tissues and be absorbed and converted into heat. The microwave oven is a familiar use of RFR.

Another scientist, Dr. Hyland, who is based in the physics department at Warwick University and at the International Institute of Biophysics, in Neuss-Holzheim, Germany says that the body is an electro-chemical instrument with exquisite sensitivity and the kind of radiation emitted from mobile phones has an impact on the stability of cells in the body.

Children are particularly vulnerable
Referring to the effect of microwaves from a mobile phone, Dr Hyland says, “The main effects are neurological, causing headaches, lack of concentration, memory loss and sleeping disorders. It can also cause epilepsy in children. Children are particularly vulnerable because they are still developing their immune systems and are less robust than adults.

Dr Hyland’s research, published in the latest edition of the respected medical publication The Lancet, follows his analysis of more than 100 earlier studies involving tens of thousands of people.

Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA
A recent study that was conducted by 12 research groups in seven European countries found that in laboratory conditions radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA. The research project, called Reflex study, which took four years and which was coordinated by the German research group Verum, studied the effect of radiation on human and animal cells in a laboratory.

After being exposed to electromagnetic fields that are typical for mobile phones, the cells showed a significant increase in single and double-strand DNA breaks, with damage not always being repaired by the cell. Mutated cells are seen as a possible cause of cancer. DNA carries the genetic material of an organism and its different cells. “There was remaining damage for future generation of cells”, said project leader Franz Adlkofer.

In addition, the Swedish Institute of Environmental Medicine found that ten or more years of mobile phone use almost doubles the risk of acoustic neuroma, or benign tumors on the auditory nerve. “When the side of the head on which the phone was usually held was taken into consideration, we found that the risk of acoustic neuroma was almost four times higher on the same side as the phone was held, and virtually normal on the other side,” the institute added. While non-cancerous, acoustic neuroma tumors that are not removed can grow to sizes where they put pressure on the brain and become life threatening.

Lead Us Against the Big Liar

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 27 - 2008

Tomorrow, Illegitimate president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will again address the House of Representatives. As tradition dictates, she’ll present a report and an agenda. This report is supposedly a true and honest account of what government has done to achieve the previous year’s SONA. And Gloria is supposed to give an agenda to guide legislators on the priority bills this year.

Oppositionists say Gloria will just lie and picture what Makati mayor Jejomar Binay said: “..a situation where people are not hungry, oil is cheap…and government officials are honest”. United Opposition (UNO) spokesman Adel Tamano meanwhile enjoined the people to just listen to the “true” State of the Nation (SONA) along Congressional Avenue and in Makati to have a grasp of the true realities of Philippine life.

True, Gloria would probably lie to us and say that she and her mafia gang are doing something to arrest what the Inquirer said, is the continuing slide of major institutions of governance to corruption and decay. Gloria would picture the “success” of her administration in solving some of the basic problems we face today. These lies would make us catatonic again, making us complacent and inutile. What Gloria is doing is weaving a tapestry of intricate lies and half-truths that as a whole, picture a stable nation.

The real question here is what will we do about it? If we are being lied about by this usurper, are we supposed to do something about it? Are we just to go to Congressional avenue and listen to alternate viewpoints?

These opposition groups should provide an answer. They should enjoin the people to act accordingly. For, in not doing so, they are being negligent of their very job of being fiscalizers and true change agents. It is not enough to comment or make aspersions about Gloria. This is the time for them, the opposition, to provide some answers so that truly, the People will see, feel and hear that they do, indeed, represent the interests of the masses.

To the Opposition–don’t provide us with empty talk. The people already know we’re all in deep shit. Provide us direction and guide us on what to do with a monumental problem like Gloria.

Pinoy Youth Rage

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 26 - 2008

Friends, I just developed a new site all for young Pinoys out there. It’s called Pinoy Youth R.A.G.E. You can find it at http://pinoyrage.wordpress.com (or if you want to link with it, the URL is http://wordpress.com/pinoyrage)

There’s also a new site which I think, you’ll also enjoy. If you need to relax, find time to meditate, then, this emerging blogsite will help you. Its The Philosophy of Sossego.

This Philosophy of Sossego (”Sossego” in Brazilian Portuguese means “calmness”, “peace”) promotes a system of total well-being. It is not Brazilian, but a synthesis of everything about how to unlock the power of the body to heal itself. Great site. But, I think this is still on the developing stage so visit it if you have time.

Panamanian boxer works an upset against AJ Banal

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 26 - 2008

Better luck next time boy!

Better luck next time boy!

It was a stunning loss.Panamanian boxer Rafael ” El Torrito” Concepcion flew all the way from Panama for one goal–to be a world champion. And tonight, July 26, he did just that. And AJ “Bazooka” Banal, unfortunately, became his victim.

Prior to this fight, AJ Banal was both a hometown and a critics’ favorite. He came into this fight will sterling credentials–a fighter who has 15 wins, no defeats and tagged as the next Manny Pacquiao. He trained with the best of the best and even enjoyed the confidence of most fighting afficionados.
Concepcion, meanwhile, has scant credentials. He trained in New York, appeared to be a tough cookie and reports say, left his wife and kids to fight in Cebu for the world super flyweight belt.
The initial rounds showed Concepcion fighting for dear life. Early on, Banal was able to throw big punches, which left Concepcion’s leg wobbly. The Panamanian’s nose became bloodied early in the fight but it did’nt sap his energy.
Concepcion was a dirty fighter. It was obvious that Concepcion hold on to Banal’s arms while he punch the side of AJ’s body. When he’s ready to go down, he clutched Banal. When opportunity presents itself, he rubs his head on Banal’s head, trying to create contusions. Every round, he does that, throwing body punches to Banal and holding on when in trouble.
In the ninth round, Concepcion successfully weakened Banal that on the tenth round, the wily Panamanian caused a stunning defeat. Banal came down and was counted out.
Obviously, Concepcion won thru a combination of dirty and legal tactics. It was obvious that the Panamanian got away with it. But, hey, you gotta give credit to him. Boxing is a dirty sport and AJ’s corner should have realized that.
AJ Banal is a good fighter. He’s a trained counter puncher. He punches hard and shows true grit.
What he lacks is intensity. He’s also NOT a thinking boxer. That’s his weakness. He allows the enemy to control him instead of the other way around. Though dirty tactics employed by Concepcion, those body shots, should have been avoided had AJ Banal pushed him.
I just looked at Banal’s blogspot.com site and 72% of those who visited it says he’ll knock Concepcion out. Wow! I don’t know what they’ll do now given this stunning upset.
But, AJ, don’t lose hope. You’re just 19 years old. You have many years ahead of you. You’ll still box and train. One advice though—start training with your mind. I mean, physical conditioning, etc. can only be good if you have the mental toughness to go with it. You have been out-boxed, that’s evident here. And, please the next time you fight, fight as if dear life depends on it.
And oh, by the way, I commend ABS-CBN 2 for a job well done in this coverage. Yes, it was an upset but it sure showed Filipino boxing at its best. I just hope that ABS-CBN Sports continues giving Filipinos around the world such world-class sports coverages.

Betrayal of the Most Foul

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 22 - 2008

While many of our fellow Filipinos wallow in hunger and poverty, ten prosecutors from the Office of the Ombusman spent 996,000 pesos for a 10-day “observation trip” to Denver, Colorado. Nothing wrong with that, since the US Justice department sponsored the group’s plane tickets and room accommodations while on “study leave”. What’s sickening is the thought that we just paid 100,000 each to these prosecutors while it’s not really part of their job to craft or change legislation pertaining to our justice system anyway.

And I thought that government is implementing austerity measures? What a waste of people’s hard-earned money! Walanghiya talaga! Is this the way government spend our hard-earned taxes?! Hey, we’re sacrificing our lives and prostitute ourselves in our work just to pay off those taxes and VAT, and here are these lazy people just wasting nearly 1 million pesos just for this frivolous and expensive trip!!

And to think that the trip was led by Deputy Ombusman Mark Jalandoni, the trusty lieutenant of Ombusman Merceditas Gutierrez. This same man staged that press conference in defense of the embattled Gutierrez who’s now locked in a “power struggle” against Special Prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio.
"Out here, on my own"

"Out here, on my own"

Villa-Ignacio is now the subject of an intensive and massive smear campaign allegedly being instigated by Gutierrez and some palace alligators. Since 2006, efforts were made to clip Villa-Ignacio’s powers. His office has been stripped of its responsibilities. Most of his staff are being made to report directly to the Office of the Ombusman. And worst, someone is being groomed to replace him, simply because Villa-Ignacio refuses to play the dirty game of those in Malacanang.
Palace gators want Villa-Ignacio’s head simply because he wants to follow the law, period. He’s been known in legal circles as a stickler of the law, an upright man who has a strong will and an indefatigable fighter. He’s the man who fought and won the battle against former president Joseph Estrada.
After that pyrrhic victory over Erap, forces in government has been relentless in their campaign to destroy the special prosecutor. Instead of being rewarded for his loyalty in upholding the fight against graft and corruption, Villa-Ignacio found himself all alone in his battle. He’s been stripped of most of his powers and even charged with graft and corruption himself.
Is this Arroyo’s way of rewarding a good man such as Villa-Ignacio? Wagging tongues say it’s Villa-Ignacio’s closeness with former speaker Joe de Venecia Jr. that did him in. Others say, Villa-Ignacio is too clean, too upright, too straight for his own good. He’s perceived to be “un-dependable”, particularly when he refused to lend credence to the weak cases filed by government against former Justice Secretary Perez and the ZTE. What’s more, palace gators fear him. Villa-Ignacio can’t seem to give them an assurance that the Office of the Special Prosecutor would be soft on Gloria and the rest of her mafia gang mates after 2010.
Some coffee shop habitues even suggested that this campaign against Villa-Ignacio could be part of the “settlement” or “political haggling” between Gloria and Erap camps. Remember that both camps are now hotly discussing their political futures in 2010 and possibly some sectors might have asked for Villa-Ignacio’s head. Was Villa-Ignacio betrayed by Gloria and her evil ilk?
Well, they’re all in for the surprise of their lives, because Villa-Ignacio just vowed to stay put until his term ends in 2012.  Yes,Villa-Ignacio has just dugged himself in, preparing for a long fight against his enemies. We must protect him. The people must side with him. He’s the only honest man left in this government. Let’s protect him against these forces of evil who want to perpetuate their own corrupt and perverted concept of justice in this country.

Diesel to breach 60 pesos per liter

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 22 - 2008

House speaker Nograles has proposed an inquiry behind recent fuel prices hikes. Congress wants to open the books of oil companies. Why? Because more and more people are actually getting angrier by the day due to these weekend hikes.

And who does’nt?

And surely, millions are cursing government for this. That’s why the palace authorized Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes to go on the propaganda route, telling people that government has nothing to do with it and it’s these oil companies which are to blame for this. Tell that to the Marines, Mr. Secretary! Reyes is being used to divert public attention away from the culpability of government in this issue.

If Gloria can use her “moral suasion” to convince oil companies for the second time to lower their prices by 1.50 per liter, surely, you can convince them not to implement a 6 pesos per liter hike of diesel pump prices come this weekend.

These “moral suasion” thing is more political than anything else. Gloria just wants to get some credit from the on-going economic crunch to the detriment of all of us.

Gloria risk a revolt from the masses should these giant oil companies continue fooling us into believing that they need to recover from their losses. If they can do that lowering just by being asked to, then, surely, those prices are indeed overpriced by at least 12 pesos per liter!

What this incident also shows that government needs to repeal the oil deregulation law (or momentarily suspend it) and get back control of this precious commodity in the name of the people. Political will is needed at this point.

What is more evident is this–the reason why government allows these oil companies to raise prices is the billions worth of VAT collections they amass from this. Imagine, the BSP reporting a 115 billion peso collection from VAT. And it’s not even the fourth quarter yet.

It’s time to be a hero, Mrs. Arroyo. Unleash the full force of the law against these oil companies and get hold of the reins of fuel and energy in the name of the people.

Collusion between GMA-Oil Companies

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 20 - 2008

When is it going to end?

When is it going to end?

After a day of raising diesel prices by 3 pesos, Petron and Shell agreed to lower pump prices by 1.50/liter. Malacanang announced the rollback after news reports reached the palace that transport groups have called for a strike and thousands of angry motorists condemned the government.

This is odd since global oil prices have actually been dropping. Today, crude prices are in the US$ 138 per barrel levels, lower by about US$ 10/barrel. So, what’s the reason for this price hike this week?

And if oil companies can very well lower their diesel pump prices by 1.50/liter, that only means one thing–that stupid 3 pesos per liter is actually an overpriced one!

What the palace has not realized yet is this–there’s actually a psychological threshold in all of this. There’s a limit to what the public can actually tolerate and that is a 60 plus pesos per liter worth of diesel. If oil companies breach this, then, all hell would definitely break loose.

Government must be forewarned that should diesel prices go up as high as 60 pesos per liter, there’s a ripple effect. Food prices will go up. Transport groups will again call for a fee hike. And more and more people will definitely find it very difficult to survive.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary response. Government should implement another pay hike. I know that the law prohibits it, but government does not have any choice. Between the devil and the deep blue sea, government must find solutions and fast!

The Dark Knight–a cult classic!

Posted by Ricky Rivera On July - 20 - 2008

A cult classic

A cult classic

Chris Nolan’s latest opus, ” The Dark Knight” might break the highest opening record to late–US$ 158 million–in just a few days from its worldwide premiere.

Critics around the world praised the movie as the “greatest Batman movie ever made”, and I, along with my family, agrees with every word said about The Dark Knight.

It’s a cult classic, the kind that you want to watch more than ten times. Yeah. It’s soo good that it made me cry. I’m waiting for the release of the original DVD and whatever the price of that one, i’ll gladly part my money just to have it.

Dark Knight succeeded where every Marvel superhero movie failed (especially the preachy Spiderman series)because it turned the age-old philosophical discussions about heroism upside down. It started a discussion by showing what happens when we don’t need heroes anymore because we ourselves, have become one. We just have’nt realized it yet.

It’s not preachy but it goes deep into people’s psyche. The intricately woven tale talks about our search for heroes every time we face difficulties, when all we need to do is look at ourselves. We just need to face challenges that directly affects our own lives.

Dark Knight shatters the millennia-old philosophical discussion about messiahship.

Our Reality

Our Reality

In fact, Nolan sparked a discussion. The entire movie is the discussion. Do we need one single person to save the world from evil?

We have a penchant for leaving the dirty job of cleaning our lives to some group (government) or one individual (Jesus or Buddha or Prophet Muhammad) that we forgot that, within us, we can be heroes.

We don’t need a Bat suit to become heroes. We just need to be reminded that, in extraordinary circumstances (such as that scene of people inside two ferries being made to decide who will flip the switch to cause the death of other people in the other side), where our very lives are at stake, decisions can be based not only on personal considerations, but on social justice and equity.

When Detective Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent became successful in their anti-crime campaign, Batman suddenly found himself irrelevant. He felt that it’s time for him to retire his Bat suit, which was pierced by bullets the night before. That scene was symbolic of the soon-to-be transformation of Batman from a superhero to somebody, a human being out to become a real hero.

This has escaped the people’s attention because they always depend on Batman to clean up their city. Real heroism came into light when Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent sacrificed their lives just to show people that heroism is not a monopoly of a few; rather an enterprise of the many. True heroism is shared responsibility.

Sadly, the movie also showed what happens afterwards–the world always need someone to sacrifice himself just so the people would awake from their stupor. Batman sacrificed himself by bearing the weakness of Harvey Dent.

The movie succeeds in using real-life imagery to make us realize these things. And mind you, if you’re expecting heroes, they’re everywhere. Even the Joker is a hero. He epitomizes the terrifying cancer that society created.

Anyway, just watch the movie and see for yourself if you share the same thoughts and send me an email afterwards.
