Teenagers selling virginity online

A teenager living in Hongkong has reportedly gotten close to US$ 7,000 from someone interested on her ad. The ad, posted over www.hkmensa.net says that she’s willing to give up her virginity in exchange for money. The site has attracted controversy since a 22 woman reportedly sold her virginity for bids which reached US$ 7.8 million. The case was so controversial that it attracted many teenagers, particularly those desperate to finish college.

In the Philippines, we are fortunate that no such case was reported or published. However, Filipino online users are increasing (now estimated as between 30-43 million) and it would just be a matter of time before we read somebody trying to auction herself using the net.

The Internet is a powerful tool. It is so powerful that some people use it to sell sex. Nothing wrong in that except that the Internet is definitely not an entirely secured place. Teenagers and kids are exposed to the dangers of cybersex almost every single day. And this is not healthy.

Auctioning oneself online is the new form of prostitution. The term actually is definitely not “auctioneering” but “selling” to the highest bidder. And this is unfortunate since this new technological tool should be used for good purposes not for these kinds of activities.
