Vice President Leni Robredo’s visit to South Africa last March costed a hefty P786 million according to Department of Budget and Management executive Atty. Raul dela Roca.
Robredo, together with senior Liberal Party (LP) members including Senator Francis Pangilinan met with African parliament to discuss about corruption.
Joining Robredo in the delegation are lawmakers who are mostly members of the Liberal Party (LP) including its president, Senator Francis Pangilinan.
According to the Vice President, the trip was sponsored by the Friedrich Neumann Foundation, but official information from DBM revealed that the trip was paid by Filipino taxpayers.
“Every year, they send delegations in different parts of the world. Every year, Liberal Party members are invited,” said Robredo in a mix of English and Filipino.
Robredo’s trip to Africa coincides with the “Palit-Bise” rally organized by Duterte supporters on April 2.
The rally was organized after a series of impeachment threats against Robredo because of her video message criticizing the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, played at one of many side events during the meeting of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
Dela Roca said that the total amount spent was not immediately identified because it took several months to collect all receipts.
“Hindi namin inaasahan na aabot sa ganito kalaki ang nagastos ni VP Robredo (We did not expect that VP Robredo’s expenses reaches this much)”, Dela Roca said.
Dela Roca added that the most expensive of all was the hotel reservations which amounted to P389 million.
Robredo’s camp refused to give comment on the matter as of press time. /Jun Veneracion/
