Ranillo baby goes bold

Posted by Ricky Rivera On August - 1 - 2008

Eighties matinee idol Mat Ranillo’s baby went extra sexy in a men’s magazine. Nothing wrong except that it’s not necessary. Ranillo’s daughter is a talented actress. Baring one’s assets for all those lusty men seems an idiotic thing to do.

There’s so many “sexy” and “young actresses” out there now–Anne Curtis, Iwa Moto, Angel Locsin to name a few. Oh, I forgot Kat Halili. Another pretty young thing going the bold or sexy route seems extra headache. The market has been saturated already by these baring and daring teeny boppers. Another one might be too much already for a people already burdened by high prices (Good thing FHM, Maxim, UNO and Playboy did’nt raise their prices. They’re getting rich thru sponsorships anyway).

And oh, the recent Playboy issue is really trashy. They pictured a malnourished model, reputedly a sexy one. I’ll not say who she is, but probably the reason why Playboy hired her is for her to epitomize the modern Pinay. With high fuel and food prices, many Filipinas would naturally have that kind of body. So, Playboy, is that cover a social commentary?

A field day

Posted by Ricky Rivera On May - 13 - 2008

Politicians had a field yesterday, lambasting Meralco and trying to justify a possible takeover a few days from now. GSIS President Winston Garcia went to the show all fired up, with his voluminous documents and pieces of evidence purportedly showing how the Lopezes earned billions of pesos to the detriment of the Filipino people.

Meanwhile, talks are a-buzz that former MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari is being groomed to replace Gloria’s factotum at the ARMM Chairmanship. Misuari is going around Muslim communities trying to seek or court their favor.

While all of these are going on, Suluanons are militating against Governor Abdulsakur Tan, led by hundreds of farmers. There’s a food crisis in Jolo, and the governor is helpless about it. In all of Mindanao, Luzon and the Visayas, people are rising up due to the effects of the high food prices.

By the way, saw the trailer of Sharon Cuneta’s new movie, the caregiver. I think it’s a fantastic one. Kudos to direct Chito Rono and Sharon Cuneta for this movie! I know it’s a tearjecker and I hate movies that makes me cry. Nonetheless, I will go to the theater and see this obra maestra. Sharon says, this is reality. Yes, it is. I’ve been an OFW myself (not a caregiver, but a manager for a big firm) and people don’t really know the tremendous sacrifices one makes in order to survive in a foreign land.

This will revive the flagging Philippine movie industry. Oppss…almost forgot…the movie of Aga and Anne Curtis. Despite its story flaws, i still commend the film outfit who did this because it promotes the beauty of the Philippines. Anne Curtis is the sexiest Pinay girl alive.

It’s a good thing that Katrina Halili will now be in a stellar role over at GMA 7. Given the right opportunity and packaging, this girl will go places.

About Maxim, they featured Angel Locsin. Well, what’s new? They say she’s hot. Well, probably years ago. She’s not that hot anymore. After what she and her manager did at GMA 7, people suddenly lost all interest on her. Her show, Lobo, is not getting the ratings top management expect from it. Maybe its unbelievable? However, Locsin surely is a lobo in real life after that very controversial over the bakod move.

Heard Heart Evangelista went abroad to shoot her teleseries (or is it a movie?). Echo said that he still loves her. Well, Heart says she feels the same way. Don’t know about these guys. If Echo is really in love, he should go wherever she is right now and propose marriage. That would rid us of these two forlorn lovers.

Playboy–an FHM Philippines copycat

Posted by Ricky Rivera On May - 4 - 2008

I saw the latest FHM Philippine edition just a few days back. I’m extremely proud that FHM has regained its bearings. I mean, FHM is bringing its old glory back, thanks to the threat of competition from the new boy on the block, Playboy Philippines. It looks great. The cover girl looks pretty and sexy. That’s the way to go FHM!

The bad news is–I did’nt buy it. The last issue that I have of FHM was a few months back. The articles seems an enticing read, but sadly, lacks the potent power of a good read. Maybe the editors of FHM should look back and re-assess their retinue of writers. I mean, we, men, don’t just look for pretty ladies. No. We want our magazines to satiate both our thirst for beautiful things and nice-to-have gadgets and our intellect. Hey, we’re not that sex hungry. Sex, as they know, is just a selling tool. Its all marketing.

Maybe the guys over FHM is misinterpreting their market. They probably assume that the fight right now is confined to whoever is more baring, more daring and more nipple-showing. No.

Your audience deserves something better. They want a good read. They want an engaging read. You’re market is not your tambay boy or those guys meandering in a street store.

Your audience, I believe, are professionals. They want nothing more than premium stuff.

That’s why I hate to reiterate it–you guys at Playboy Philippines ought to give us what Hugh gave the Americans–a premium magazine that raises both the testosterone levels and brain cells. Not some stuff that speeds up our disgusts and reduces our brain cells.

I expect the second outing of Playboy Philippines to be more premium, more classy, and more “engaging” so to speak. Magazines are personal things for us men you know. We want mystique. We want exclusivity. We want nothing more than the best.

I’m expecting other men’s mags, such as Maxim, Uno etc. to follow the lead.
